I am a big purveyor of physical copies of stuff I pay physical money for, I am not a fan of all digital for many reasons. There are pluses to digital though, especially with comics. Comics can be read in a “directed” view, directed view is simply a method in which the publisher can control what order the panels are shown to the reader (eliminating another problem with reading on screens – panning and zooming). Check out Comics by ComiXology for a great digital store with this style of service in their releases, highly recommended.Atomic Dreams The Lost Journal Of J. Robert Oppenheimer is an interesting concept for a comic book, it is not exactly a facet of information/entertainment that is really overdone (historical stuff with a slight sci-fi/mystical bent). Atomic Dreams works quite well to display the contents only every once in awhile there is a problem with making out a word or two (I am using the JXD S601 which has a 4.3 inch screen). The art style used by Carnival Comics is clean and to the point but still quite detailed, reminiscent of the time that is represented in it’s digital pages.
Atomic Dreams follows the development of the, well, Atomic Bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War II, that is pretty much fact. From there though, Atomic Dreams takes creative freedom by mixing in some spirituality and mysticism from the Native American traditions and goes wild with the direction (visiting Japan AFTER the bombs fell and experiencing the pain and anguish they caused for instance). Still, Atomic Dreams is a good read and tells it’s story in a compelling manner that made me stay up later than I intended to finish it in one sitting, it was that good.
