Review: Beach Buggy Blitz by Vector Unit on the Zeepad 7″ ICS Android Tablet

beach buggy blitz google android zeepad mario kart (1)

Okay, kart racing games used to be THE thin in gaming, that should date me pretty well for the readers, but in recent years, they have kind of dropped off the radar for most developers.  We had greats like Mario Kart (which still lives on with every new Nintendo system), Crash Team Racing and many others to choose from over the years but today, well, the pickings are slimmer.

Just because the competition is less varied doesn’t mean that Beach Buggy Blitz gets a free pass, truth is, it doesn’t need one.  BBB is more than competent enough to stand on its own against Nintendo’s offering (which many gamers feel is getting slightly long in the tooth now that it is on its 7th or 8th offering).  Everything about Beach Buggy Blitz is polished and clean without being “plasticky” in appearance (rendered is the term I am looking for here, like Mario Kart 64 on the Nintendo 64).

Beach Buggy Blitz feels more like a 3D running game similar to Agent Dash, Temple Run and Running Fred among many others but with karts and other drivers on the road.  Coins need to be collected, obstacles avoided and tunnels need to be traversed in order to reach the next section of the race.  That is where I think BBB separates itself from the competition, BBB feels much more like Outrun meets Mario Kart than just being a Mario Kart clone.

Each section of the race track is timed, much like Outrun and other titles from the early days of racing games.  With each section that is cleared, any remaining time is added to what you accrue at the next checkpoint- this is crutial in having enough time to finish the later, longer, sections.  Getting coins in the race allows you to buy upgrades, new karts, paint jobs, and even new drivers.  Power ups are purchased then found randomly on the track, not permanently installed on your kart which is unique.

Each attempt at the racing event the track will change slightly.  One time through, the track may swing left, then a straight away and then a tunnel, the second time through though, it may be left, right, left, right, wide turn and then a tunnel and a jump.  This varying of the race map is pretty cool.  Also, there is the online scoring and challenging friends aspect to consider.

Just grab Beach Buggy Blitz on your Android device, it is worth it, even if you are not a kart racing fan, not a 3D running fan or into cartoon games.  Grab it now.
