Review- Huey Android GPD XD

2D side scrolling action platforming games.  I miss them.  Actually, I miss the time that they ruled the roost so to speak.  From Super Mario to Aero the Acro-Bat.  I played most of them.  I say most because there was a time there were too many coming out to purchase in due time.  This may have been their downfall with fans.  Gluttony.  With the continued rise of Android as a gaming platform, we have seen many classic genres resurface.  Huey is squarely in the 2D side scrolling action platform realm.  Maybe that is why I enjoyed it so much.

Huey is not fast paced like Sonic the Hedgehog, though not as slow paced as Super Mario either.  Somewhere in between rests Huey.  I like it here.  Things require thought, much like some levels of a good Mario game.  You are not going to blow through level after level in Huey and collect all of the items.  No, to do that you are going to have to pay attention, perform some trial and error and even backtrack from later in the game.

The levels in Huey are not large at all, they are probably smaller height wise than many of the 16-Bit Sonic levels we traversed.  What is here is just right.  Hit a section that you can’t get past but you can see, say, the outline of blocks?  That means you missed a switch or something somewhere else in the level- time to go find it.  Sometimes you simply are not ready to reach certain areas yet- though you can clearly see them, just out of reach.

Android Huey

The biggest gripe I have with Huey is that sometimes the hit detection is off a bit.  Other than that, things are done quite well.  Huey holds up great in my nostalgic eyes.

GPD XD Specifics:  Huey benefits greatly from the physical controls of the GPD XD.  This frees up the entire screen, free of obstruction by your fingers.  Also, you won’t get mad because your finger is not quite on the button to jump when you need it most.  This is covered via the on screen controller mapping in the GPD XD.
