Jewel Quest is not a new title, at least the series has been around for awhile, though iWin has decided to start recycling game names. Here gamers are treated to a quest style game in the same vein as Candy Crush Saga, right down to the linear path, in app purchases for power-ups and a challenge level that is through the roof. Where Candy Crush Saga dealt with, well, candy, Jewel Quest covers the gamut of ancient civilizations, particularly water logged ones.
If you are a Match 3 fan then you already know how to play Jewel Quest. For those that don’t know, you get a board of gems and must match three or more together to remove them from the board. Jewel Quest added the tactic of requiring each space on the board to have a match made on it to turn it gold, thusly finishing the level. This is where the challenge has always been for Jewel Quest- turn squares to gold and the layout of the board (they are not all square).
Jewel Quest comes with the usual three star rating for levels (thanks Angry Birds) with new levels, islands, becoming available once you pass the previous set of levels. Collecting relics throughout the levels will help in beating later levels but be prepared to either grind to earn gold (to use said relics) or to buy gold with real money. At least here, when you lose a level, you still receive some gold, so it is not a “winner takes all” style of play.
Fans of the genre, especially those looking for an alternative to Candy Crush Saga, will find a good bit to enjoy in Jewel Quest. If you are easily frustrated, be prepared to be tempted to hit up the IAP.
