The Hobbit, the final “blockbuster” movie of 2012 is all the rage and here we are playing games based around the myths presented in the movie and the book it was based on. Join Bilbo, Gandalf and the rest of the Get Along Gang as they go forth and try to defeat the great evil in the land and along the way, find friendship and trust in others and a bit of jewelry. Oh wait, none of that is in this “game”.
What we have here in The Hobbit: Kingdoms for Android and iOS (though this only covers the Android version, I am sure the iOS version is no better) is a game that is essentially a “menu game” as I like to call it. There is more game play in Restaurant Story or Bakery Story than I experienced with this game. Sad but true. Don’t believe me, check it out for yourself, there is not much fun to be had here.
Playing The Hobbit is about as fun as browsing the file system on your computer if you had a Middle Earth theme installed. Everything is timed, want to upgrade a farm to produce more food? Click then wait. Want to add more troops? A couple of clicks and then you wait. Want to multi task and spread the pain out a bit? Nope, you aren’t doing that in this game, Kabam have it set to where you can literally do ONE thing at a time (at least anything meaningful to advancing your game).
There are, of course, options to speed up the waiting for stuff to complete but you won’t have enough to do anything- the crystals are just too rare. You can purchase various enhancements for your kingdom with real money but why bother?
I understand there is supposed to be a battle element somewhere in this game but I never got to it. The Hobbit locked up, reset my device and generally didn’t work quite right long enough to complete many tasks, let alone go on a battle with online opponents who have suffered through menu after menu and the tedious waiting game.
Even if you are a die hard Hobbit or Lord of the Rings fan, you should look elsewhere for your entertainment outside of the books and movies. There are some PC titles that run on DOS that you may be interested in, grab DOSBox, purchase a copy of those games and run them on your tablet and it will still probably be more entertaining than clicking menus and waiting.
