Update Sega Game Gear Retail Resurrection Occurs in Wisconsin, Location and Sale Dates Confirmed

It is no secret that Sega has announced they are working with AtGames (ugh)on what is being called the “Sega Genesis Mini” but their return to retail was preempted, slightly. Earlier this year, in a retail location in Wisconsin, Sega made an impromptu return to retail sales tracking service, NPD Group. It was a Game Gear game originally released on November 17th, 1992. Nearly 26 years later it popped back up on sales charts.

This preempts Sega’s planned return to retail with the Sega Genesis Mini by quite a bit. It certainly is getting better PR than that AtGames “console” will.

In February of this year, Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear saw an official retail sale occur. It happened in Wisconsin at a Half Price Books location who had recently “restocked” the game somehow. Exactly how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear came to be available for restock is not known at this time.

NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella cauth the sale of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and broke the news on his Twitter account. It was rather quickly solved as to who it was, where, and when. Many are reporting it was March 2018, it was in February. Mr. Piscatella stated it was in March but the buyer says it was February when they bought it.

This is interesting news though and it certainly has garnered a lot of attention for Sega.

The Sega Game Gear was a battery eater, even if you had the battery pack it was quick to drain. This was the one area that the Nintendo Game Boy was able to use in advertising and to reach parents. The Nintendo Game Boy, while being black and white and not nearly as good with audio, could last a lot longer on batteries.

Sega has yet to return to the portable market after the Game Gear was discontinued in 1997.
