Design & Build
Mini PCs come in two flavors here. New boxes like the GMKtec G3S, BMAX B1 Plus, and KAMRUI AK1PLUS ship in compact plastic or aluminum shells with VESA mounts, letting you hide them behind a display. The refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G2 and G5 Mini units are built like tanks, with metal chassis, tool-less access, and enterprise-grade reliability. The EliteDesk models feel noticeably more premium and are easier to service, while the newer boxes win on modern connectivity like dual 4K output.
Performance
Expectations should match the silicon. The Intel N95 and N5095 chips in the GMKtec and KAMRUI models handle web browsing, 4K video, and office work smoothly, and their SSD expansion slots keep them responsive. The refurbished EliteDesk units, with 6th and 9th-gen Core i5 processors and 16GB of RAM, are meaningfully faster for multitasking and light photo editing. For a Proxmox home lab or a snappy secondary desktop, the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 offers the best performance per dollar during a sale.
Pros & Cons
- Tiny footprint: Fits behind a monitor or under a TV.
- Low power draw: Sips electricity compared to a full tower.
- Dual 4K output: Many models drive two high-resolution displays.
- Upgradable storage: Most support M.2 and 2.5-inch SSD expansion.
- Limited gaming: Integrated graphics suit only light or older titles.
- Refurb variability: Renewed units can vary in cosmetic condition.
Alternatives to Consider
If you need more graphics muscle, a mini PC with a dedicated GPU or an Intel NUC with Arc graphics is a better fit, though pricier. For pure media playback, a streaming stick may suffice. But for a versatile, always-on desktop, a refurbished EliteDesk 800 G5 or a new GMKtec G3S offers the best Prime Day value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are refurbished mini PCs reliable?
Renewed business machines like the HP EliteDesk are professionally tested and often more durable than budget new boxes. Buy from sellers with clear return policies and grading, and they make excellent value.
Can a mini PC handle gaming?
With integrated graphics, expect smooth performance in older or lightweight titles and emulation. For modern AAA gaming you will need a model with a discrete GPU.
How much RAM should I look for?
8GB is the practical minimum for smooth everyday use; 16GB, as in the EliteDesk and KAMRUI models, is far more comfortable for multitasking.
Do these support dual monitors?
Yes. Most of these mini PCs offer HDMI plus DisplayPort or dual HDMI for two 4K displays, making them capable little productivity machines.
Verdict
Prime Day is the smart time to buy a mini PC, and the best pick depends on your workload. For snappy everyday computing and home labs, a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G5 delivers unbeatable value, while the GMKtec G3S and KAMRUI AK1PLUS are strong new options with modern connectivity. Match the processor to your needs, confirm the seller’s return terms, and grab your box when the discount lands.
